Four precise words where English uses two
Albanian family vocabulary preserves the route through the family. That means a child can hear the word and immediately know whether the relative belongs to their mother’s or father’s branch.

Use the example, keep your own story
Every family can look different
Flori’s example uses a mother-and-father tree because it makes the Albanian maternal and paternal words easy to see. Children can still use the vocabulary in families with one parent, adoptive parents, stepfamilies, two mothers, two fathers, guardians, or relatives who live far away.
The relationship is the learning clue—not what a family must look like. Regional Albanian also varies. This page begins with widely taught Standard Albanian forms; families may also hear forms such as axhë or mixhë.
Language sources and review note
The maternal/paternal distinction and cousin forms were checked against language-learning and dictionary references. The example sentences use Standard Albanian and are deliberately short for family reading.
