Something enormous was cooking. Flori stood up on his stool, shut his eyes, and breathed it all the way in. Luna put her nose in the air and did exactly the same.

A table for six
They laid the table for six. Six plates, six forks, six glasses, and a line of small pumpkins down the middle.

Knock

Knock again
Knock. It was the neighbour from up the road, on her own, holding a small bunch of flowers. Flori put both arms straight up. Somebody went and fetched one more chair.

The table gets longer
They pushed a little table onto the end of the big one and put one long cloth over the top. Now the table went out of the room and into the hall. Not one single chair matched.

Going round
Before anybody ate, they went all the way round the table, and everyone said one thing they were glad about. When it came to Flori, he stood right up on his chair and said, ‘Luna.’

Full and sleepy
Afterwards the plates went away and the fire went low. Flori fell asleep on the couch with Luna warm against him, and the long table stood empty and happy in the next room.
