Someone on the farm
On an old Norwegian farm, they say, there is someone you never quite see. He is small. He is grey. He looks after the animals when nobody is watching.

You see what he has done
You do not see the nisse. You see what he has done. The hay stacked neat. The animals calm and warm. Two small footprints in the snow, going nowhere in particular.

A bowl of porridge
Once a year, on one of the darkest nights, you leave him something. A bowl of porridge, thick and warm and creamy.

Do not forget the butter
And on the very top — this part matters — one big knob of butter. Forget the butter, and the nisse will know.

Out through the snow
Out through the blue snow they went, Flori holding the bowl with both hands, Luna walking close beside him so that nothing at all would spill.

Leave it, and go
They set it down just inside the barn door, and they did not stay to watch. That is the rule. He will not come while you are looking.

God natt
Back inside, the stove was warm and the windows were black with night. ‘God natt,’ whispered Flori — goodnight. In the morning, they knew, the bowl would be empty.
