The dark comes early
In Denmark, in winter, the dark comes early. It was only the afternoon, but outside the window the sky had already gone deep blue.

One candle
So they lit one candle. Just one. It was very small, but the whole table changed colour.

Then another
Then another, and another, until there were four little flames standing in a row, all leaning the same way.

Blankets and thick socks
Luna fetched the big wool blanket. Flori found the thickest socks. They pulled everything close, the way you do when it is dark outside and warm inside.

Something warm to drink
There was something warm to drink, and one soft bun each. Nobody was in a hurry. Nobody was going anywhere at all.

The word for it
In Danish there is a word for an evening like this one. Hygge. It does not mean a party. It means close, and warm, and enough.

Godnat
One by one the little flames went out. Luna’s chin went down on Flori’s knee. ‘Godnat,’ said Flori — goodnight. Outside it was still dark, and that was quite all right.
