The smallest one
The patch was full of enormous pumpkins. Flori walked past every single one of them, and chose the smallest pumpkin there was.

Hands right in
A grown-up took the lid off. Then Flori put both hands right inside and pulled out a great stringy handful of seeds. It felt very strange, and very good.

A friendly face
They gave it two triangle eyes and a wide happy smile, with one square tooth. Exactly one tooth. Just like Flori’s.

One small light
When the light went inside, the whole face lit up gold. It did not look frightening at all. It looked pleased.

Out into the blue
Outside, the sky had gone deep blue and the air smelled of leaves. Flori carried the little light in both hands, very carefully, all the way down the path.

The whole street
And every step had one. A whole street of small friendly lights, all the way down. A bee waved. A little lion waved back.

Goodnight, pumpkin
They set their own light on the front step, where anybody walking past could see it. Then up to bed. ‘Goodnight, pumpkin,’ said Flori. The pumpkin went on smiling in the dark.
