A windy morning
Wind came up the canal and pushed at everything it met. Flori's little curl bent over. Luna's ears blew back. High above the rooftops, four great sails began to lean.

The sails begin to turn
Whoomp, said the first sail. Whoomp, said the second. Flori counted them going by—one, two, three, four—while Luna watched their big shadows sweep across the grass.

Inside the mill
Inside, everything was turning too. Two big round stones went round and round. Golden grain went in at the top, and out came soft white flour, quiet as snow.

A bag on the bike
The miller tied one plump bag of flour into the wooden box at the front of a long bicycle. Luna walked beside the wheel. Flori held on with both hands.

Over the bridge
Up went the little brick bridge, over the water. Down the other side rolled the bicycle, past red and yellow tulips standing in tidy rows.

The baker's warm shop
The baker turned flour and water into round soft loaves. The whole shop smelled of warm bread, and the windows went foggy at the corners.

Bread by the water
They sat by the canal and shared warm bread while the sails turned slowly behind them. ‘Dank je wel,’ said Flori—thank you. The wind grew quiet, and so did the day.
